The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mozambique Stock Exchange, SA, (BVM,SA), Salim Cripton Valá, argues that investing in agribusiness is the way to industrialize Mozambique and the African continent.
Salim Valá was speaking on the sidelines of the launch ceremony for the VII National Seminar for the Dissemination and Awards Gala for Agro-Processing Innovations, to be held between August 22 and 23, 2024, in Maputo.
“The gateway to industrialization on the African continent is agribusiness. Most African countries will only be able to embrace industrialization by starting with agribusiness,” said the CEO of BVM, SA.
During the event, promoted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education through the Center for Research and Technology Transfer for Community Development (CITT), Salim Valá explained that the interconnection between universities, companies and the government is the epicenter of innovation and the development of a nation's economic system.
“Either we invest massively and heavily in science, technology, research and innovation, or we won't succeed. Either we move forward or we fall behind. We need to have a robust science, technology, research and innovation system that is also integrated and inclusive, in which different players can operate and with a long-term perspective,” added Salim Valá.
For his part, the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES), Daniel Nivagara, stressed that initiatives in the areas of science and technology have been the driving force behind the economic development of communities, pointing out that one of the major challenges facing the country today has to do with the maximum reuse of agricultural products from communities.
“We think that processing agricultural products for human consumption represents a great opportunity to create jobs, reduce poverty and increase food security, especially in rural areas,” said Daniel Nivagara.
The Director of the Center for Research and Technology Transfer for Community Development (CITT), Henrique Cau, said on the occasion that “one of the ways the CITT has found to disseminate the results of research, technological development and innovations is to hold regular seminars for community development actors, which have been spaces where science and technology makers, innovators and community development actors share innovative solutions for the development of communities”.
The event, which was aimed at reflecting on agro-processing innovations and technologies in Mozambique, as well as facilitating links between innovators and the productive sector to create partnerships in the process of improving, reproducing and marketing innovations and technologies, was attended by representatives of MCTES institutions, university rectors, academics, exhibitors, innovators, among others.
